General Questions

What does Fastedge do?

Fastedge is an online video encoding service. We take videos from you, your users, or other sources and convert them into formats that are compatible with web playback, mobile phones, or any other device you need to support.

Who is Fastedge for?

Fastedge is designed for developers who want to integrate video into their applications without going through the painful and slow process of building, maintaining, and scaling up their transcoding servers. Any website or application that accepts video uploads from users needs some form of back-end transcoding. Videos uploaded by users are rarely in sizes or formats that can be played on the web or other devices.

Is there a limit on the file size that can be uploaded using the application UI or the API?

Yes. Only files smaller than 8 GB can be uploaded using the application UI or the API.

How do you calculate output minutes?

“Output minutes” refers to the length in minutes of an output video. For example, a 10 minutes video file transcoded to 2 output formats will count for 20 (10 x 2) output minutes, and so cost 20 x $ 0.010 = $ 0.2. We do not charge for thumbnail generation and API calls.

Do I need an integration library in order to work with Fastedge?

No. Integrating with Fastedge is as simple as sending an HTTP request in a JSON format.

Where are my transcoded files delivered?

You can select as many output formats as you want for your files using our templates. Once you have done so, we will process your video and deliver it to your FTP, SFTP, or Amazon S3 storage location.

Does Fastedge.ai support mobile formats?

We support almost all mobile formats, and we almost certainly have the mobile video codec you want.

Does Fastedge.ai support H.265?

Yes, Fastedge supports H.265. The H.265/HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) compression standard was developed to double the compression efficiency of the previous standard, H.264/AVC. At typical consumer video distribution bitrates, HEVC has been largely successful in doing so, and it is the supported encoding for the emerging Ultra HD Blu-Ray format.

Does Fastedge.ai support adaptive bitrate?

We support all major adaptive bitrate technologies.
